As the Chinese Civil War came to an end, the ROC’s influence in mainland China faded. By 1949, the Communist forces had consolidated control over mainland China, leaving only Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu under ROC administration. The ROC government now sees itself as a successor state to the People’s Republic of China, while the PRC views the ROC as an illegal occupying force.

Born in roc zuidoost , DC at the height of the crack era, Sa-Roc’s childhood experiences shaped her understanding of the world around her, deepened her emotional sensitivity and cemented a social consciousness that would later feature prominently in her work. Despite the obstacles, she persevered and has become a lyrical force to be reckoned with in this era of socially conscious hip hop.

With her newest album, The Sharecropper’s Daughter, produced by Sol Messiah (TLC, Madonna, Boys II Men), she proves to be a forerunner in what could potentially be an upcoming hip hop renaissance. Her gritty delivery, exceptional writing and crafty wordplay make this project a must listen for any true head.

AllEyesOnDC recently caught up with Sa-Roc at Sankofa Video Books & Cafe in Northwest to talk about her music, community involvement and more. Nich Lewis, a mother of two young women and community organizer from Northeast DC, told us that she admires Sa-Roc and wants her daughters to look up to her as a strong and positive role model. Najjar Musawwir, a professor at Southern Illinois University who studies African origins of the Banjo, was also in attendance at the meet-and-greet and shared similar sentiments.
